In 2023, my dream of contributing to community development and youth empowerment became a reality when I joined the GAME project as a Playmaker.
I was filled with excitement, eager to join other young people in creating positive change in my community by using sports as a tool for transformation.
As Playmakers, we were trained to serve as coaches—guiding and inspiring children between the ages of 5 and 16, while also addressing key social issues such as gender equality, inclusion, health, sanitation, and education.
This role deeply impacted me personally, showing me how empowered young people can drive meaningful change in their communities.
In 2024, the GAME project required Playmakers to take up key roles, with this new requirement came another milestone in my life. I was appointed as the Zone Manager for Zone 7 (Jisonayili-Tamale). This new role came with greater responsibility and challenges, but I embraced the journey, learning to overcome obstacles and adapt quickly.
As a Zone Manager, I was no longer just a Playmaker but the leader of an entire zone. My responsibilities expanded from working directly with children to supporting other Playmakers in their coaching. I organized activities, participated in quarterly meetings with other Zone Managers, tracked progress, prepared monthly reports, and ensured regular practices to keep our zone active and vibrant.
Through this role, I learned how to manage a team, resolve misunderstandings, and create an inclusive space where every voice matters. Working closely with my teammates taught me adaptability, collaboration, and resilience, qualities that made us stronger together.
This transition journey has shaped my leadership capacity and prepared me for greater responsibilities. Most importantly, it has taught me that leadership is not just about guiding others, it is about creating space for young people to shine, being fair and inclusive, engaging teammates in every activity, and ensuring our zone thrives while standing out from the rest.
With my new skillset, I look forward to more opportunities and challenges towards shaping my professional and personal goal.
