From Interrupted Dreams to Skills and Independence: Rashida and Shamsia’s TUMA Journey

For young women like Rashida Abudu and Awal Shamsia, the journey towards economic independence has not always been straightforward. Through the TUMA Project, both are gaining practical skills, renewed confidence, and a stronger sense of purpose.

At Queen Glow and Beauty Parlour, Rashida describes the significance of her experience simply: “As a result of TUMA project, there is something I am engaged in that I can call mine.”

For Rashida, the opportunity to develop a practical skill has given her something more than training, it has created a sense of ownership and engagement in an activity she can identify as her own.

At Naji Beauty Care, Shamsia is turning a long-held dream into reality. Her ambition to become a hairdresser was interrupted when her former trainer passed away while she was still undergoing training. After that, she did not continue with any active training.

The TUMA Project has given her an opportunity to restart that journey. Within just two to three months of training, she has already developed skills in ponytail styling, pedicure, and braiding.

Beyond the technical skills, Shamsia says the experience has also influenced her personal outlook: “It has impacted my level of seriousness and commitment to work and life.”

Their stories highlight what skills development can mean beyond learning a trade. For Rashida, it is having something she can call her own. For Shamsia, it is the revival of a dream that was once interrupted.

Through TUMA, skills are being built, confidence is growing, and young people are getting another opportunity to shape their futures.
