From Uncertainty to Education: How Community Advocacy Helped Emmanuella Find Her Path to Learning

Through the CLEAR Project, YEFL Ghana helped a father in Tatale District overcome misconceptions about disability and connect his six-year-old daughter to specialised education and social support.

When Nicolas, a farmer in Tatale District, looked at his six-year-old daughter, Emmanuella, he worried about her future. Born with a hearing and speech disability, Emmanuella was not attending school. Her father believed her disability meant she could not receive an education, and she often remained isolated because of the communication barriers she faced.

Nicolas also had to stay close to her because she could not hear or communicate verbally and could easily get lost. The family did not know how to access the education and social welfare services available to support her.

How Community Advocacy Made a Difference

A turning point came when Mark, a Community Journalist supported by YEFL Ghana under the CLEAR Project, engaged Nicolas and helped him understand that Emmanuella could attend school. He also introduced the family to available social welfare support for children with disabilities.

Mark supported the family through the process of obtaining the necessary disability assessment through the District Assembly, helping them navigate procedures that had previously seemed difficult to access.

The intervention led to a significant change. Emmanuella was enrolled at Savelugu School for the Deaf in Savelugu, and the family received GH₵2,000 to help purchase school items. Nicolas also contributed from his farming income to meet her remaining needs.

A Child Growing in Confidence

The impact of the intervention extends beyond school enrolment. According to Nicolas, Emmanuella has begun learning new things and demonstrating them at home.

She is also becoming more sociable and communicating more effectively through sign language. Reflecting on her progress, Nicolas said: “She is learning new things at school and has started demonstrating what she learns at home.”

He added that her confidence had improved and that she now greets people and interacts more with others. Nicolas has also started learning sign language to communicate better with his daughter.

The Power of Community-Level Advocacy

Emmanuella’s experience demonstrates how trusted community advocates can help families overcome information gaps and access essential services. It also reflects YEFL Ghana’s commitment to youth-led advocacy, inclusion and community accountability.

Through the CLEAR Project, Community Journalists and Girls’ Caucus members help connect community concerns with schools, public institutions and duty bearers who can respond. As highlighted in YEFL Ghana’s work on the Youth Community Journalism approach, empowering young people to engage with local issues can strengthen community participation and contribute to positive change.

Emmanuella’s journey shows what becomes possible when families receive the information and support they need. Continued follow-up will be important to ensure that she remains in school and that her educational and social support needs are met.
